Walks 6 & 7 – Kennet and Avon Canal Walking Weekend – 23rd & 24th April.

Kennet and Avon Canal Path Walking Weekend – 23rd and 24th April.

This weekend walk was the 6th and 7th stages in a series of planned linear walks along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Reading to Bristol lead by Richard & Heather Wilson.

Sixteen members spent the weekend walking from Pewsey Wharf to Seend Cleeve  ( a total of 18 miles).  We stayed in the Travelodge at Devizes which was very comfortable and convenient to the canal.

On the Friday evening we ate at the Bridge Inn at Horton – good pub food.

Saturday’s walk from Pewsey Wharf to Horton, was through pleasant countryside in the Vale of Pewsey with its White Horse standing out in the sunshine.  with stops for lunch at the ‘quirky’ Barge Inn, Honeystreet (Greetings earthlings and welcome to the Barge Inn, “Crop Circle Central” and “Most Famous Pub in the Universe”. If you’re arriving from outer space, exit at the Milky Way and hang on a right at Mars) and afternoon tea at the Bridge Inn, Horton. In the evening we dined at The Bistro in Devizes run by Chef Peter Vaughan.

On the Sunday, starting in Horton,  we walk through Devizes enjoying bacon baps at the K&A Canal Centre’s wharf side cafe and then the drama of the Caen flight of locks which provided some good photo opportunities.  We were so lucky with the weather – dry and a fair amount of sunshine.  We finished at the Barge Inn at Seend Cleeve for a late lunch before setting off home.

A lack of suitable transport in the area, was overcome by one or two members with ‘good logistical brains’ and  a military type operation with cars left in various locations to ensure that we could get back to the hotel or home when we arrived feeling weary at the end of a day’s walking  ran like clockwork.

A great weekend.

Another weekend to complete the next two stages (8&9) is planned for October so watch this space.
